Saint Mardarije’s Birthplace to be Restored as Monastery

The house where Saint Mardarije of Libertyville was born, in the village of Kornat, Montenegro, is slated to be restored as a monastery, according to plans announced by the Holy Metropolis of Montenegro and the Coastlands and Diocese of New Gracanica and Midwestern America.

Historical records have revealed that the birthplace of Saint Mardarije of Libertyville is located on the ruins of a 17th Century monastery where Mardarije I (Uskokovic) ruled for a time as the first Metropolitan of Montenegro from 1637-1659.  It was on these hallowed grounds that the first Serbian Orthodox bishop of America and Canada would be born in 1889 — 230 years after the death of his namesake.

His Eminence Metropolitan Amfilohije and His Grace Bishop Longin visited the site in August and blessed the efforts for the restoration of the historic monastery.
